One Love Fiji Foundation

Our Story

Our Beginnings: From Talanoa to Taking Action

For years, a close-knit group of friends would gather for talanoa (conversations) around the kava bowl, sharing ideas about ways they could contribute to their homeland, Fiji. Though these discussions were filled with good intentions, they never became concrete actions.

The Turning Point: Cyclone Winston

Everything changed on 19 February 2016, when Fiji was struck by Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston — the most powerful storm ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. The cyclone caused widespread devastation, resulting in over a billion dollars in damage, and marking one of the highest casualties count in Fiji’s history. The aftermath of this cyclone in Fiji will be felt for decades to come.

Galvanising Support: The GoFundMe Campaign

Moved by the urgent need to help Fijians struggling to cope with the magnitude of recovery, the founder of 1Love launched a GoFundMe campaign with an initial goal of raising $5,000 (AUD). The response he received was overwhelming; in just four weeks, donations soared to $14,000. This remarkable outpouring of generosity came from people of all backgrounds, demonstrating true community spirit.

Rebuilding and Recovery Efforts

The funds raised were directed towards a wide range of post-Cyclone Winston recovery projects. These included providing hospital equipment, emergency response supplies, and facilitating the rebuilding of infrastructure. The lessons learnt during this life changing experience is the impetus for forming 1Love Fiji Foundation.

Ethos and Intentions

Our mission is to remove barriers for disadvantaged and vulnerable Fijians by providing enduring support in education, housing, health, and disaster relief. We ensure donated funds are managed responsibly through strict due diligence and fiscal controls. Our approach emphasises sustainable long-term solutions that empower recipients, rather than offering short-term aid.
